What a vCTO does
A virtual CTO (Chief Technology Officer) takes on the technical leadership of your IT without being on your payroll. Decisions stay with you. We phrase requirements, assess proposals on their technical merits and sign off results.
Your provider makes sure things run. The vCTO makes sure the right things run.
Typical situations
Usually there is no shortage of IT, but of a technical counterpart:
Your provider suggests, you decide. But nobody on your side can judge whether the suggestion holds up and fits what you already run.
Each delivers their piece and points at the others at the interfaces. What sits in between belongs to nobody.
Your team is good at day-to-day work. Next to the ticket queue there is no time for target architecture and standards.
The cloud bill keeps rising. Nobody can say which part is spent on what, and how much of it is needed.
Boundaries
The vCISO owns information security and governance, the vCTO owns the technology. The two combine well. We do not replace your provider, they gain a technical counterpart. And since GRiC-IT also runs IT itself: in this role we do not recommend ourselves as the operator.
From what size does this make sense?
The question is not your headcount, but your dependency. As soon as several systems have to work together and stay aligned, there is architecture, access and interfaces that somebody has to own. That starts at two or three employees.
